Aromatherapy Skin Tonics and Astringents

Tonics stimulate the circulation, reduce oiliness and help refine open pores and unevenly textured skin. They are usually applied after cleansing to ensure complete removal of any residue left from creams or lotions. A skin essential oil tonic has a much milder effect than an astringent and should also refine the skin texture. An astringent, on the other hand, is stimulating to the whole skin system but can be drying and should only be used on oily or open-pored types of skin. Astringents should not be used on blemishes or acne as they can exacerbate the condition. Acne needs much gentler handling. Seborrhoea and other skin blemish conditions need a treatment tonic that heals as well as correcting the balance of the skin.

Powerful & Effective Aromatherapy Skin Tonics
Essential oils used in tonics and astringents are very effective, although they are not easy to blend without a dispersing agent and should always be shaken before use. The method of making the following tonics and astringents is the same for all. Put all the ingredients in a bottle and shake well. Leave for twenty-four hours then pass through a paper coffee filter. Re-bottle and use as needed after cleansing, or just to freshen up.

Cotton-wool pads can be soaked in your tonic and then separated into thinner sections before being put in a tightly sealed box with another teaspoon of tonic passed over them. Hey presto - you have your own brand of instant freshen-up, cleansing pads.

Never use perfume oils as a substitue for essential oils, perfume oils have no therapeutic benefits and should be used solely for their scent.
